TRUTH, JUSTICE AND RECONCILIATION ACT 2008 SIGNED INTO LAW

President Mwai Kibaki has signed into law an Act of Parliament to provide for the establishment, powers and functions of the Truth, Justice and Reconciliation Commission -TJRC-.

This comes in the wake of Thursday's cabinet meeting which resolved that President Kibaki and Prime Minister Raila Odinga head a cabinet sub committee spearheading the implementation of the Waki report.

The bill passed by parliament this month would establish a commission of eminent persons to asses past human rights abuse since Kenya's independence in 1963 including the post election violence of 2007 and 2008.

It aims at bringing perpetrators of human rights violation to justice, promoting national reconciliation and resolving conflict between different groups.

It is to further provide compensation or restitution for victims and serving as a public acknowledgement of the suffering of the victims.
