President Mwai Kibaki was among 13 African heads of States and other dignitaries who witnessed the swearing in of Jakaya Kikwete as the fourth President of the Republic of Tanzania, this morning.
President Kibaki and his entourage departed from Mombasa International Airport shortly after eight.
In a message sent yesterday, Kibaki congratulated Hon Kikwete on his election as President of the United Republic of Tanzania, saying that he was looking forward to working closely with him in order to enhance ties between the two countries.
President Kibaki described Kikwete as a true East African who believed in the spirit of the East African Community.
Jakaya Kikwete, 55, won the elections last week, taking over 80 per cent of the votes, in an election described as fairly run by International Observers. Mr. Kikwete served for 10 years as Tanzania’s Foreign Minister, after retiring from the military at the rank of Lieutenant- Colonel.
Mr. Kikwete takes over from Benjamin Mkapa, the third Tanzanian President, whose two terms have just ended. The Late Mwalimu Julius Kambarage Nyerere was the founding father while Hassan Mwinyi took over as the second President.
