Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has said that the country will empower the girl-child through sports to enable those talented in sports to achieve their potential.
Mr. Musyoka said the country has girls who are talented in various disciplines in sports and could be empowered through sports and not necessarily through academics.
The Vice President was speaking this evening during a dinner party in honour of Prisons Volleyball team at the Panafric Hotel hosted by the Ministry of Home Affairs.
The team which clinched the first position in the Africa Club Championships held in Nairobi will represent Africa in the World Volleyball Championships in Doha, Qatar in October this year.
Mr. Musyoka who congratulated the team for winning the Africa Club Championship three consecutive times, said the country was proud of the team for flying the nations flag high.
“This is a wonderful performance. We are truly proud of you, and will support you and follow your progress in your training sessions in preparation for the World Volleyball Championships”, said the Vice President.
He told the team to maintain high discipline during the championships since a lot of people will be watching them.
Concerning prison reforms, the Vice President stressed that prisons should not be regarded as places for torture and punishment.
Mr. Musyoka said penal institutions were correctional service and not places for punishing offenders.
He appealed to society to accept back ex-prisoners saying they had reformed while serving in jail.
“When we handover ex-prisoners’ to society, they should not punish them”, he said.
The Vice President urged the local media to show case the volleyball team so that Kenyans can honour and support them.
He assured the team that the ministry will organize for them to train at Kasarani Sports Centre which has adequate facilities.
The Ministry’s Permanent Secretary Dr. Ludeki Chweya, congratulated the team saying it had brought tremendous glory and honour to the ministry and the country.
He said the team had become a showcase for the department of Prisons as it had done well not only for the national scene but also on the international scene.
Dr. Chweya noted that Prison officers had become champions and professionals in the field of correctional services and were now advisors in many countries including Africa, Europe and United States of America.
“We were used to expatriates coming to Africa to provide expertise that we didn’t have, but now we are travelling to Europe and America to offer expertise advice”, he said.
The Commissioner of Prisons Isaiah Osugo noted that the teams challenge was lack of training facilities.
He said if the team receives good exposure, the country will have the best volley ball team since the players have the energy.
Present at the function were nominated Member of Parliament Mohammed Affey, Senior Prisons Officers and the Chairman of Kenya Volleyball Federation Mr. Waithaka Kioni among others.
