Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka has challenged players in the petroleum industry to package smaller and affordable Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) for use by the rural poor.
Mr. Musyoka asked gas companies to be innovative and package the commodity for the mass market for as low as Kshs 200 to 500, saying the move will discourage over-reliance on wood fuel, and help conserve forests and natural water sources.
“The customers who have been relying on charcoal and paraffin to cook will then turn to gas, and thus promote environmental conservation”, Mr. Musyoka noted.
The Vice President disclosed that plans were underway to construct a 7000 metric tonne LPG import facility in Mombasa and 2000 metric tones storage and distribution facility in Nairobi.
He was speaking during the inaugural graduation ceremony of the Petroleum Institute of East Africa’s (PIEA) School of Petroleum Studies, held at the Kenyatta International Conference Centre today, where 29 candidates in the oil industry were awarded with various management diplomas.
Mr. Musyoka lauded the role played by PIEA and the ministry of energy in the establishment of appropriate standards and codes of practice which has led to increased market participatation and competition.
The Vice President commended the Energy Regulatory Commission for reviewing and updating the existing regulations to ensure that operating and marketing standards meet legal requirements besides a level playing field.
He noted that a stable petroleum sub-sector needed sound regulatory framework and efficient supply chain infrastructure.
‘The regulatory framework must however provide a fair and equitable environment for investors, consumers and employees,’’ said Mr. Musyoka.
Others who addressed included The Vice Chairman of PIEA Mr. Mwendia Nyagah ,The chairman of the school of petroleum studies Mr. Andere Tura,
The graduation was also attended by the PIEA General Manager Mrs. Wanjiku Manyara.
