Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka Saturday said the government has no intention to interfere with freedom of the press through the Kenya Communication (Amendment) Bill.
Mr. Musyoka reaffirmed the government's commitment to uphold press freedom and called on the media to exercise tolerance and embrace dialogue on the contentious issues in the Bill.
He urged the media to be part of national healing process and avoid practices that could spark off national protests and jeopardize peace and harmony that has been restored after the crisis witnessed earlier in the year.
"The media should be part of national healing and reconciliation, nothing cannot be resolved when we embrace dialogue and understanding, let us not allow national protests, we must have a sense of tolerance", the VP said.
The Vice President was speaking to the media after attending a colorful wedding ceremony between former Ms.Catherine Malinda and Mr. Maurice Ndambuki held at Braeburn College, Ridgeways in Nairobi.
The groom is a son to the Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Mr. Gideon Ndambuki.
The Nuptial ceremony was presided over by the Archbishop of the Anglican Church of Kenya, Benjamin Nzimbi assisted by the Provost of All Saints Cathedral, Ven. Canon David Sawe.
The Vice President said Kenyan cannot allow another regrettable situation to happen again, saying there are major challenges that the nation needs to address apart from other issues that can be simply resolved.
Mr. Musyoka cited the need to fast truck the constitution making process, the economic challenges related to world economic meltdown and nurturing national healing and cohesion.
The Vice President dismissed notion that Parliament had hidden agenda on the media Bill, adding that there was still room for amendment on the Bill awaiting Presidential Assent.
"There is no hidden agenda on the part of parliament or the cabinet on the media Bill, let us not do some things that could spark off national unrest, the President and the Prime Minister respects press freedom and the government will not gag the press", Mr. Musyoka said.
