Rogue media houses which contributed to fanning post elections ethnic animosity will be dealt with by the law.
Information and Communication Minister Samuel Poghisio said a rigorous media monitoring process had been put in place to check on the contents of the media and discipline errant media houses.
When Kenya sunk into ethnic tension just after the 2007 general election the government took unprecedented move and swiftly stopped all live broadcast in what it said was in the interest of national security.
On Monday however information Poghisio announced the lift of the ban on live broadcast but warned that errant media houses would not be allowed to use the airwaves to disrupt tranquility and peace in the country.
Citing vernacular stations which he said were part of the mess, Poghisio said a task force would be formed to investigate the contents aired by such station just before and after the general election and if found to have been inciting or carrying hate messages appropriate action would be taken.
He said while the government continues to pledge to uphold and protect freedoms of the media as a pillar of democracy such freedoms must be go hand in hand with responsibility.
He said the ban on live broadcast was taken at a time when the country had been plunged into the most challenging political scenario that had threatened the peace and security of the nation.
The lifting of the ban he said is aimed at allowing the Media Council to superintend the affairs of the media adding that the nation should not be endangered by reckless reporting that might propagate hatred and despondency amongst Kenyans.
Poghisio also said a number of suspects were already in police custody for sending inciting text messages via phones.
