Before the General Elections, the Police Commissioner announced that the Government would not allow any public rallies to be held by anybody after the elections. This decision is still in force and will be enforced until the current security situation normalizes.
The Government reassures all Kenyans that the Police have responded swiftly to the violence that has been witnessed in various parts of the country. Police officers have been deployed to ensure that normalcy is regained and violence is contained.
It has become clear to Kenyans that majority of the people who we are witnessing looting and blocking roads are hooligans who are taking advantage of the prevailing environment to engage in crime. We are, however, taking very seriously, all acts aimed at displacing people, targeting people for violence and creation of fear and assure all Kenyans that the situation is now under control.
The Government has no intention to order curfews, has no intention to declare a State of Emergency and has no intention to use the military. The police are in control of the situation and we should expect the situation to normalize within the next few days.
The Government calls on all Kenyans to embrace tolerance, peace and non-violence. We are all members of one large community called Kenya. Let us rise above the African continent’s curse of using violence every time we have opposing views. Kenyans are a great people in a great land and we have and will continue to live together in peace and democracy. We request people to stop sending alarming and intolerant messages to each other. Let us instead pray and embrace love and unity, not threats or insults.
