Kenya’s fast-growing economy relies on several different factors, not least of which is an efficient and modern road network. If we are to build on our trading success and provide an enabling environment for our farmers and businesses to move their crops and merchandise, our roads must be given top priority.
A lack of adequate funding during the late 1990’s and early 2000, coupled with heavy demand, placed a heavy burden on our road network leading to deterioration and poor road conditions. Over the past three years the Kenya Roads Board has restructured the funding set aside for roads. An increase in the Road Maintenance Levy Fund (RMLF) from Kshs. 5.80 per litre to Kshs. 9 has helped to generate much-needed revenue. The Kenya Roads Board Fund estimates that it will raise over Kshs. 15 Billion from the RMLF and Transit Tolls.
To ensure optimal management and value for money, the Kenya Road Board Fund is tightening its Technical Compliance, Performance and Auditing functions to ensure that the approved Annual Public Roads Programme is undertaken as provided, and that the road network receives the best possible attention.
